Les militaires ont nommé un général président par intérim
Le retour de l’armée au pouvoir en Birmanie, alors que les dernières élections avaient massivement donné le pouvoir à Aung San Suu Kyi et son parti politique, la Ligue nationale pour la démocratie (LND).
Selon le media Le Monde : Le président birman Win Myint et plusieurs hauts représentants du parti au pouvoir ont également été interpellés lors d’une opération menée à l’aube. « Nous avons entendu dire que [Aung San Suu Kyi] est détenue à Naypyidaw [la capitale du pays] ; nous supposons que l’armée est en train d’organiser un coup d’Etat », a précisé Myo Nyunt le porte-parole de son parti, la Ligue nationale pour la démocratie (LND).
Avant d’être arrêtée Aung San Suu Kyi a exhorté la population à « ne pas accepter le coup d’Etat ».

President Biden has been briefed by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. We continue to affirm our strong support for Burma’s democratic institutions and, in coordination with our regional partners, urge the military and all other parties to adhere to democratic norms and the rule of law, and to release those detained today. The United States opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of recent elections or impede Myanmar’s democratic transition, and will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed. We are monitoring the situation closely and stand with the people of Burma, who have already endured so much in their quest for democracy and peace.
