Apres 23 ans au Musée d’art islamique de Berlin, la britannique Julia Gonella arrive à Doha pour diriger le Musée d’art islamique du Qatar. Une chance pour les deux parties.
Julia Gonella études
La carrière professionnelle de Julia Gonella démarre vraiment en 1994 lorsqu’elle décroche un doctorat en études islamiques et en anthropologie sociale à l’Université Eberhard Karl de Tübingen, en Allemagne.
Auparavant on entend parler d’elle en 1986 et 1987 :
- at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, her BA in Islamic Art and Archaeology (1986) and MA in Social Anthropology (1987)
Julia Gonella est en premier lieu une archéologue qui a utilisé pioche, pelle, truelle et pinceau… pour fouiller le terrain. Elle effectuera des fouilles sous couvert de l’Allemagne de (1984-1989) à Raqqa en Syrie, sous couvert du Koweit en 1985 à Bahnasa / Egypte. Entre 1996 et 2011 notamment, elle a coordonné les fouilles syro-allemandes de la citadelle islamique d’Alep, l’un des plus grands trésors du Moyen-Orient, tragiquement endommagé lors de la guerre civile syrienne.

Magnificent manuscripts from the collection of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Museum für Islamische Kunst bear witness to the diversity of Christian traditions in the Middle East – from late Antiquity to the 19th century. As well as splendid Armenian illuminated gospels they include, for example, Syrian parchment bibles, Coptic papyri and other Christian artefacts in many other languages of the region. Examples of the influence of biblical themes within the Islamic tradition are also on display. Indian miniatures with Christian motifs from the Vollmer Collection round off the exhibition.
